DKG Biennium Theme for 2025-2027
“What kind of action hero are you?”
|
We are all action heroes. As members of DKG, we—all of the talented female educators who have taught others, whether our pupils were preschoolers or graduate students, in a private setting or a public one, plus collegiate members pursuing the profession—are women of action. My question to you, is: “What kind of action hero are you?” My goal during my biennium is to learn just what each of your special powers are (or were), and how they relate to DKG’s Seven Purposes, which I have shared at the end of my message. The acrostic below serves to provide you with some prompts as you reflect on what makes you, personally, an action hero:
A – Advance the profession. This is Purpose #3. How have you advanced our amazing profession over the course of your career and membership in DKG? Share your story! C = Collaborate. How have you collaborated with others to make your educational organization(s) or DKG chapter stronger? Share your story! T = Teach. This is the one common requirement for membership in DKG: being a key women educator! What were your successes during your career? Did you receive any accolades? Do you have amusing or heartwarming tales to tell? Share your story! I = Initiate, endorse, and support desirable legislation in the interests of education and of women educators (Purpose #4). Have you been involved in this? Share your story! O = Organize to optimize and stimulate personal and professional development of members..., as in Purpose #6. How have you ensured that members (including yourself) have received the learning opportunities they desire? Share your story! N = Network. Purpose #1 tells us to unite with other women educators in the world. This union leads to networking opportunities. When have you connected with other female educators to expand your professional reach? Share your story! |
H = Honor women: Purpose #2. How have you honored women, both within and outside your DKG chapter? Have you been the recipient of an honor bestowed by DKG? Share your story!
E = Endow awards to aid members. This is Purpose #5. Have you encouraged chapter members and/or non-members to apply for scholarships or grants to assist them in growing personally or professionally? Perhaps you have received an award that helped you do so. Share your story!
R = Raise Awareness. This is Purpose #7. How have you informed members of current economic, social, political, and educational issues? Share your story!
O = Offer support to early career educators. How have you helped new educators transition from surviving to thriving? Share your story!
What I plan to do with your stories (which may be shared as narratives, photographs, poems, songs, artwork, quilts, textile arts, and more) is create a 10-chapter book (one chapter for each letter in the acrostic above) that will include at least one entry from each Connecticut DKG member. Hopefully, members will find the final product a wonderful celebration of their impact on the teaching profession and discover exactly what kind of action hero they are! Stay tuned for more information on how I will collect your stories. (I also would love to hear as many of your stories as I can in person or via Zoom at your future chapter meetings!)
Delta Kappa Gamma's Seven Purposes
The original purposes of DKG (Delta Kappa Gamma Society International) emphasized gender equity, school legislation, excellence in education, good teaching conditions, networking, and financial help for women preparing to teach. These purposes have formed the basis of our current Seven Purposes:
1. To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship;
2. To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education;
3. To advance the professional interest and position of women in education;
4. To initiate, endorse and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators;
5. To endow awards to aid members in pursuing personal and professional growth and to provide grants to non-member educators;
6. To stimulate the personal and professional development of members and to encourage their participation in relevant programs of action; and
7. To inform the members of current economic, social, political and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society.
